"...Just Another Lemon Tree"

Lemon Tree Lemon Tree

The next morning wakes us up with bright sun and blue skies. Just before the tunnel which connects Canneto and Marina Lunga, there are a couple of lemon trees which attract Anitas attention. "Why can't they share the fruits which will rot later anyway?", is her standard line when we pass one.

Good question! The ones offered at the markets we usually find to be of low quality, compared to the aromatic, big and bright yellow ones waiting in the trees for a ride with a Canadian/ German couple. Sometimes we just do them the favour, and have some lemon water in the night.

From Dark to Light

From the camping site it's a 40 minutes walk into town, and since we both don't mind walking, we go by foot. Shortly after the lemon trees the road passes through an unlit tunnel through which cars, bikes, trucks and busses are racing at amazing speed. Luckily there's a fenced off sidewalk for the poor pedestrians that have to inhale the blue fog left behind by the Vespas and Piaggios.

Small Harbour Small Harbour

Finally we emerge from the tunnel, and we get a nice view of a small harbour, Lipari City and Vulcano in the background. The road makes a couple of turns as it squeezes between the harbour and the steep hillside, and becomes a long straight along the shoreline right into Lipari City.

Into Town

A Load of Tuna A Load of Tuna

Close to the road is a small beach on which fisher boats pulled up for the night. On the other side, a couple of fish shops line the street. Tuna is caught here as well, and if you've seen the movie Stromboli, you might remembe the pretty bloody tuna catching scene, the Mattanza.

The tuna fish are caught in a large net which is pulled smaller and smaller until the sea is gushing with the big fishes flapping and trying to escape. Then comes the not-so-nice part: the fishermen use large hooks to pull the tuna fishes on board, and end up with standing ankle-deep in bood.

Lipari on the Rocks

Lipari City Lipari City

The fortress offers a great view over Lipari City.

The Modern Amphitheatre The Modern Amphitheatre

The old centre of Lipari is the rock with the fortress on top of it. This has been the place of the oldest human settlements on Lipari, dating back in the stone age 4000 years ago.

Last but not least, there is a modern amphitheatre. It has been build in the 70s, and it fits into the scenery as it had been there for centuries. It is situated directly next to the Museum of Island Geology, and makes nice place for resting when the sun is high.

Lizard Checking the Situation Lizard Checking the Situation

Lizards are prominent all over the islands, and if they weren't so quick and shy, you would step on them on Stromboli. This guy here isn't too shy, and Anita managed shoot this photo, just when he peeked out of the safety of a gap between the stones.

Exploring the City, Part 2

Narrow Street, Lipari City Narrow Street, Lipari City

We leave the fortress down some stairs through a gap in the massive walls. Because the cathedral on the hill was not very popular, authorities decided to provide a "highway to heaven", even if that meant to cut to antique walls. Yes, the catholic church did so many good things...

Shelves Full with Pasta Shelves Full with Pasta

Yes, Italy is definitely the country of pasta, noodles. This shot gives an impression of the variety available. Each kind has a different name, and many these we never heard before. Even Spaghetti come in a couple of varieties, from really thin to normal thickness.

For a normal European, the difference may not seem big, but I'm sure a religeous debate would break out if this would be voiced lout in an Italian restaurant.

Head of a Spada (Swordfish) Head of a Spada (Swordfish)

Lipari has great food, and if you are into fish, we know a place to go: Da Lauro at Aquacalda at the Northern tip of the island.

This head here belongs to a Spada, a swordfish. In the box to the right there are some shrimps, which seem to be caought here as well (but where? Don't they live on sandy ground?).
