UML (Unified Modelling Language)
In short, UML defines a graphical representation of classes, sequences, collaborations and states of software systems.
UML defines the following diagram types (those added since UML 1.4 in bold):
- Static diagrams (essentially visualizing structure)
- Class
- Package
- Objects (aka Instance)
- Component
- Deployment
- Composite Structure (a bit like ERD)
- Behavioral diagrams
- Use case (who does what)
- Sequence (who does communicate with who, and how)
- Communication, was Collaboration
- State Machine (states and transitions), was Statechart
- Activity
- Timing (change of state over time)
- Intercation Overview (overview that may contain sequence, communication, timing, or interaction overview diagram)
